Issuance/Renewals /Amending the Passports

Sri Lanka Consulate General receives applications for new passports from Sri Lankan nationals. If at any time there is no further space for visas or a passport is more than 10 years old or the passport is lost, an application for a new passport can be submitted to the Mission. Application forms for Sri Lankan passports are available at the Mission or can be downloaded from

Application for a new passport (All countries) - Required documents and fee

· Application form “K 35A” (“K 35A” download)

· Old passport or copy of the old passport

· Valid original Indian Resident Permit

· Four (04) color photos 4.5 x 3.5 cm (without white boarder and both ears must be visible )

· Original birth certificate + copy

· Original National Identity Card

· Original Marriage Certificate if the applicant is married female

· Photocopies of all the originals

· Ind. Rs. 9750.00 fee

Renewal of passports- Required documents and fee

Passports valid for 5 years from the date of issue can be renewed for a further period of 5 years. Total period of validity cannot exceed 10 years from the date of issue. Application for renewal of passports can be made either before or after the expiry of a passport.

· Ind. Rs. 180.00 renewal fee for one year

Change of Name in the passport after marriage- Required documents and fee

· Ind. Rs. 650.00 as fee

Alteration of passport-Required documents and fee

Issuance of separate passport to children

New passports can also be issued for children who are already included in the parent's passports or for those who were born in India and have obtained the Sri Lanka Birth Certificate and Sri Lanka Citizenship certificate issued by the Citizenship Division in Colombo, after registering their birth at this Mission.

Following original documents should be submitted along with 2 photo copies;

· Child's Sri Lanka Birth certificate issued by the Registrar General, District Registrar, Divisional Registrar should be submitted. Photocopies / copies certified by other parties / translations will not be accepted.

· If the child was born outside Sri Lanka the Citizenship Certificate.

· Parent's marriage certificate

· Consent letter signed by both parents to issue a separate passport for the child. Death Certificate in case of a spouse's death, Divorce Certificate/Court decision together with the order of Custodianship of the child if parents are divorced.

Both parents of the child should present themselves at the Consular Division of this Mission and sign the document in front of the consular officer.

Once your application is accepted it will be forwarded to the Overseas Missions Division of the Immigration and Emigration Department in Colombo. If all the required documents are submitted, it normally takes around 3 months to receive the new passport. The Mission cannot guarantee the issuance of a passport within a specific period. If the controller of Immigration & Emigration needs to verify the documents you submitted; it may take more than the above said time period.

Once we receive your new passport you will be informed . You are required to bring the current passport/emergency passport (if retained by you) along with your Cash Receipt to this Mission on any working day between 9.30 a.m. & 4.00 p.m. in order to collect your new passport.

The issuance of passport valid “Only for Middle Eastern Countries” has been terminated from 31st December 2018 by the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka.

Only passport valid for “All Countries” are issued with effect from 1st January 2019.
